Aspen Annual Gala with Garry Kasparov

The Berlin Transatlantic Conference on October 14, 2015 concluded with a festive evening, the Aspen Annual Gala. More than 170 guests came to support Aspen Germany’s work of strengthening transatlantic relations and our open societies. Former chess world champion and political activist Garry Kasparov was greeted with standing ovations when he delivered his keynote in which he argued that Assad, Putin, and ISIS will not go away on their own, thus „we must fight and we must start now, because the price will only be higher tomorrow. The alternative is not to avoid conflict, because conflict is unavoidable. It is already here. This battle is for our values. This battle is for the modern world we have built on those values."
The other highlight of the evening was Leonard A. Lauder, chairman emeritus of the Estée Lauder Companies Inc. being honored with the Shepard Stone Award for Outstanding Transatlantic Leadership. Mr. Lauder, who for health reasons was unable to receive the award in person, joined the audience by video. The Laudatio was given by Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference.
