Policy Program | Background Briefing on the Current Situation in the Western Balkans On January 21, 2019 the Aspen Institute Germany hosted a background discussion on the current situation in the Western Balkans with Alexander Jung, Deputy Head of Division 212 Bilateral Relations to the Countries of Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus and Central Asia at the German Federal Chancellery; Thomas Motak, Deputy Head of Division E12, EU External Relations (EU Enlargement, European Neighborhood Policy, Migration) at the Federal Foreign Office; Dirk Schattschneider, Head of Division 302, Eastern Europe, Southeast Europe and Caucasus at the Federal Ministry for Ecomomic Cooperation and Development; Sabine Stöhr, Head of Division 209 Western Balkans at the Federal Foreign Office; and Helge Tolksdorf, Head of Division EU-Enlargement, Southeastern Europe, Turkey at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Bundestag staffers with an interest in the Western Balkans were invited to this event that aimed at networking and fostering open exchange.
At the beginning of the discussion, the speakers presented their work and priorities of their divisions, the challenges and priorities in the region, and an outlook for the year. Also discussed were the developments and reforms of the countries in the Western Balkans, as well as the influence of other global actors in the region.
