From November 11-16, Marc Hugo Lopez travelled through the cities of Munich, Tübingen, and Freiburg to speak about voter turnout and demographics in the recent U.S. election.
Marc Hugo Lopez is Director of Ethnicity and Ethnicity Research at the Pew Research Center, where he leads the planning of the Center’s research agenda, which focuses on mapping the diverse, ever-changing ethnic landscape of the United States. He is an expert on issues of cultural and ethnic identity, Latino culture and politics, the Hispanic and Asian American populations in the U.S., global and domestic immigration, and the U.S. demographic landscape.
On the first day, he had three events lined up, at which he classified and analysed the results of the US election in front of students, experts and other interested parties. At the beginning of his trip, he gave a lecture at the Amerikahaus in Munich in front of around 150 participants. In his lecture, he explained which issues were decisive for the various population groups in the election and how institutes such as the Pew Research Center, which he heads, collect and analyse data on the US election. Afterwards, the audience had the opportunity to ask him questions.
On the same day in Munich, he met for a roundtable discussion on this topic as well as a panel discussion with other experts such as Craig Kennedy, former President of the German Marshall Fund, and Allison Hooker, Senior Vice President at American Global Strategies, in which the consequences of the election were examined in particular.
The next day, Mr Lopez travelled to Tübingen, where he gave valuable insights into understanding the U.S. voter to students of American Studies in Tübingen and other interested parties at the German-American Institute on Wednesday, 13 November.
After his trip from Tübingen to Freiburg, Mr Lopez gave a guest lecture on ‘Post-Election Perspectives and the Role of Demographics’ at the University of Freiburg the following day to conclude his trip to Germany.
