
From January 19-24, 2025, Michelle Egan travelled to Munich, Kiel, Berlin, and Erfurt, to talk about economics perspectives regarding the new U.S. administration. This included several discussions with school and university students, as well as a public event on taxes and tariffs at the Aspen Institute Germany.
Michelle Egan is a Global Fellow with the Wilson Center’s Global Europe Program. She is Professor and Jean Monnet Chair Ad Personam in the School of International Service, American University. She is the author of the book “Single Markets: Economic Integration in Europe and the United States”. She is a member of Transworld, a multi- institution project on Transatlantic Relations and Global Governance. Her work focuses on comparative regionalism, trade politics, and global governance.
On her first Speaker Tour day, Michelle Egan had a lunchbriefing with Members from the “Vereinigung der bayrischen Wirtschaft – Bavarian Industry Association” and the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. She also took part in an expert briefing with the Team of the Amerikahaus Munich. In the evening, she participated in a discussion moderated by Dr. Markus Faltermeier: “Economic Perspectives after the U.S. Elections 2024 – A Discussion with Michelle Egan.”
While in Kiel, Michelle Egan spoke to high-school and university students, including at the Max-Plank School Kiel (ca. 50 students), at the office of the Amerika-Gesellschaft, and at the Christian-Albrechts-University.
On the next day, she was welcomed at Aspen Institute Germany, where she provided an insightful analysis on U.S. trade policies under the new President Donald Trump: “Taxes, Tariffs, and the Price of Eggs: Economic Perspectives on the U.S. Presidential Election and the Upcoming Administration”, moderated by Dr. Stormy-Annika Mildner. She also participated in a background conversation at the Federal Ministry of Finance, department for geo-economics.
She concluded the tour in Erfurt, with more talks with university students, as well as a meeting with Damir Agic of the LEG Thuringia and a discussion with representatives of local businesses and industry associations. All in all, Michelle Egan provided a very valuable analysis on the consequences of U.S. trade policies on the global economy.
