Leadership Seminar by Aspen Institute Romania
What does responsible leadership look like in times of growing uncertainty and political tension? And what values sustain a “good society” when familiar certainties begin to erode?
These questions were at the heart of the Aspen Seminar for Leaders in Sibiu, organized by Aspen Institute Romania in March 2026. Set in the shadow of the Carpathian Mountains, the seminar brought together 21 leaders from Romania, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, and the Republic of Moldova for an intensive exchange on values-based leadership. Among the participants was Aspen Institute Germany Program Officer Ferdinand Eimler.
Guided by Todd Breyfogle, the group engaged in in-depth, text-based discussions spanning key works of political philosophy – from Plato and Hobbes to Václav Havel. The conversations created space to reflect onfundamental questions of ethics, responsibility, and leadership in a changing political landscape.
A particularly memorable moment was the group’s rehearsal and performance of Antigone. The play brought moral dilemmas to life and prompted reflection on courage, conscience, and personal responsibility in situations where clear answers are often elusive.
The seminar offered a rare opportunity to step back from day-to-day demands, engage in thoughtful dialogue, and build meaningful connections. Above all, it encouraged participants to reflect on the moral foundations of leadership at a time when such reflection feels more necessary than ever.
