Exclusive YouGov Polling on Transatlantic Relationship Post-Election
In the scope of the U.S. Election Night 2024, YouGov conducted exclusive polling for Aspen Germany and partners to understand better European perceptions of the U.S. elections and transatlantic relations. The election data was based on surveys conducted in various European countries, including Denmark, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden from October 9 to 24, 2024.
The results, based on a total of 9,300 responses, reveal a clearly favored candidate among Europeans: Kamala Harris was identified as the preferred winner in all the countries surveyed. Expectations for Donald Trump’s new presidency are not high, with a large majority in all countries surveyed expecting him to be a “poor / terrible president”.
YouGov also conducted surveys to gauge Europeans’ general opinions on the role of the U.S. in the international context. In this context, Europeans remain unified in their belief that the U.S. should play a central role in European security policy. However, a minority of respondents in all countries except Germany think a Donald Trump presidency will influence the foreign policy of their country. More than half of respondents in Germany (56%), Spain (56%), and Sweden (61%) believed the United States should not continue to play a leading role in global affairs under the Trump administration compared with less than 50 percent of respondents in Denmark (48%), France (46%), Great Britain (49%), and Italy (49%).
