Announcement

Action Report – “Laboratories of Democracy Initiative: The Digital Transformation: Recommendations for the State Level and for Transatlantic Cooperation”

Digital transformation is leading to some of the most profound societal challenges of the 21st century. Technological innovations can promote the resilience of societies and economies, but also pose new challenges. Given their shared values, common interests, and belief in democratic principles, Germany and the United States are natural partners to work together on these issues. Transatlantic exchange can be an opportunity for both countries to fully seize the benefits presented by digitalization and to deal with its challenges effectively. Policy-makers in state legislatures play a crucial role in this. States are not only tasked with implementing federal policies on the ground but also take on leadership roles when it comes to developing new and innovative policies. The project “Laboratories of Democracy Initiative” draws on that notion, bringing together German and U.S. American state legislators to promote a values-based exchange of ideas about common policy challenges on the subnational level. The 2020/21 cohort developed policy recommendations for the state level and for transatlantic cooperation on three main areas of digitalization: 1) The digital economy and its impact on the future of work, 2) digital infrastructure and the future of mobility, and 3) cybersecurity, privacy, and data protection. Action Report – “Engaging German Influencers – Call for Action”

Whether it is Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok – it is impossible to imagine everyday life without social media platforms and the part they play in shaping public opinion. Consequently, influencers on social media are no longer solely relevant in the communication and marketing strategies of companies but are also gaining importance in the political information ecosystem. Through their work, influencers can consciously or subconsciously reinforce the phenomenon of disinformation or can help to alleviate the problem. It is all the more important to take a closer look at the role social media and influencers play in the process of political opinion and will formation. Within our project “Engaging German Influencers” we brought together a core group of German social media influencers experts, representatives of traditional and modern media, and academics and developed recommendations for policy-makers, social media platforms, and influencers.  Our “Engaging German Influencers – Call for Action” Report can be found here: https://www.aspeninstitute.de/publications/

Aspen Germany announces new project “Future Cities – A Transatlantic Townhall Project”

Building on the experiences with scenario workshops and strategic foresight processes in recent years, Aspen Germany is excited to announce the launch of a new project in its Transatlantic Program entitled „Future Cities – A Transatlantic Townhall Project.“ What should the city of the future look like? What role can transatlantic relations play in shaping it? How can we make the cities we live in more sustainable, inclusive, innovative, and resilient? Over the course of two years a diverse group of experts from Berlin, Los Angeles, and Atlanta will develop concrete future scenarios in their search for answers to these questions. More information on this project can be found here: https://www.aspeninstitute.de/transatlantic-program/
