The Aspen Institute Germany is delighted to cooperate with the Europa Union Berlin, Junge DGAP and Europe Direct Berlin for a new event series called “Mit Sicherheit Europa”. The first panel discussion “Zwischen Anspruch und Wirklichkeit – Europas strategische Rolle und die Erwartungen an Amerika” took place on October 30, 2025, exploring the future of Europe’s security policy.
Central to the discussion was the question of how far Europe can pursue its own security and defense priorities amid shifting U.S. security commitments. The panel featured: Rixa Fürsen, Head of Podcast Berlin Playbook, Politico Germany, Dr. Lucas F. Hellemeier, Freie Universität Berlin, and Alexander Schäbler, Youth Officer of the German Armed Forces in Potsdam.
The second event will take place on November 19, 2025, titled “NATO, EU und der Zweifel an der Bündnistreue – Transatlantische Sicherheit zwischen Vertrauen und Verantwortung” at 6:00 p.m. at the Nordic Embassies, Rauchstraße 1, 10787 Berlin. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
This event will focus on questions about the resilience of the transatlantic security promise and Europe’s role amid rising security threats. Key topics will include NATO’s role as the backbone of European security, the EU’s function as a security actor, trust in the transatlantic partnership, European defense spending and troop deployment, and responses to hybrid threats.
