Aktuelles: Two Flagship Seminars in Tirana, Albania

The last week of October 2025, marked an important week for Aspen Germany’s Europe Program. Through two significant flagship events held in Tirana, Albania, the Aspen Institute Germany deepened its engagement in the Western Balkans as part of its long-term commitment to fostering regional dialogue and cooperation. The two separate events contributed to building shared understanding and sustainable partnerships for progress and stability in the region.

From October 27 to 30, 2025, the Aspen Institute Germany, in cooperation with the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania, organized the high-level conference “Structural Change in the Western Balkans“. The conference brought together policy makers, experts, and representatives from the Western Balkans, Germany, the EU, the United States, and international organizations to discuss the region’s ongoing transformation in light of digitalization, the green transition, and evolving global economic structures. Participants explored how technological progress, demographic shifts, climate change, and regional geopolitical dynamics drive profound economic and social changes, affecting labor markets, skills development, and social cohesion. The conference was part of the “Western Balkans Initiative: Engagement for Progress and Stability” project, kindly supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.

Immediately following the conference, from October 29 to November 2, 2025, the Aspen Institute Germany, in cooperation with the Aspen Strategy Group, Aspen Institute Romania, and Aspen Institute Italia, hosted the study trip “Solidarity in Action: A Transatlantic Collaboration Platform for Peace and Democracy in the Western Balkans“. This five-day program brought together 20 emerging civil society leaders from the United States, the Western Balkans, Germany, Italy, and Romania for an immersive experience featuring expert-led sessions, high-level dialogues, and cultural exchanges. Discussions addressed democratic resilience, good governance, information integrity, and the role of youth and minorities in strengthening regional and transatlantic cooperation. Cultural activities, including a guided tour of Tirana and traditional Albanian performances, offered participants deeper insight into the country’s rich heritage and identity.
