How should Europe respond to the growing influence of BRICS? As India holds the BRICS presidency in 2026, the group’s internal dynamics and global ambitions are attracting increasing attention. BRICS is often portrayed as a unified counterweight to the West, yet its members pursue different political, economic and strategic interests. India’s role is particularly important as it seeks to shape the group’s agenda while maintaining close relations with Europe and the United States.
On August 27, from 6:00-8:30 p.m., at the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Markgrafenstraße 38, 10117 Berlin, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, the Aspen Institute Germany and the Körber-Stiftung will jointly host a discussion ahead of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026.
The event will feature Bijan Djir-Sarai, former Secretary General and foreign policy spokesperson of the Free Democratic Party (FDP); Toby Chance MP, Democratic Alliance spokesperson on Trade, Industry and Competition (South Africa); Pramit Pal Chaudhuri, Head of South Asia at Eurasia Group in New York and Visiting Fellow at the Ananta Aspen Centre; and Florian Bigge, Program Director for International Politics at the Körber-Stiftung. The discussion will be moderated by Stefan Schott, Project Director India at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom.
Drawing on the findings of the new study BRICS Internal Dynamics and India’s Role, written and presented by Pramit Pal Chaudhuri and commissioned by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, the discussion will explore tensions within BRICS, India’s leadership role, and the implications for Germany and Europe.
It will also consider how European policy makers can engage constructively with BRICS members while responding to the group’s growing international influence. The event will be translated simultaneously. Please register for the event here.
