How should the United States redefine its role in a rapidly changing world, and what would a new Democratic foreign policy agenda mean for Europe and the transatlantic alliance? These questions were at the center of a conversation hosted by the Aspen Institute Germany in partnership with the Bertelsmann Stiftung and generously supported by Allianz. The event featured Rahm Emanuel, former U.S. Ambassador to Japan, White House Chief of Staff to President Barack Obama, Mayor of Chicago, and Member of Congress. Against the backdrop of shifting geopolitical realities and evolving transatlantic relations, the conversation examined the future of U.S. global leadership, Europe’s growing responsibility for its own security, and how democratic allies can strengthen their partnership in an increasingly competitive international environment. Ambassador Emanuel argued that preserving a strong transatlantic alliance will require not only continued investment in defense and deterrence, but also closer cooperation on economic competitiveness, technological leadership, resilient supply chains, and rebuilding trust among allies. The public event was complemented by a press roundtable with German and U.S. journalists, as well as an exclusive discussion with a group of young transatlantic leaders. Building on the themes of the main event, participants exchanged views on the future of U.S. foreign policy, trade, and security, while also reflecting on the qualities of effective political leadership in times of growing uncertainty.
