On December 04, 2019 the Aspen Institute Germany hosted a background discussion on the EU accession negotiations with the Western Balkan countries. Sabine Stöhr, Head of the Western Balkans Division at the Federal Foreign Office and Thomas Motak, Deputy Head of Division E12, EU External Relations (EU Enlargement, European Neighborhood Policy), discussed the EU accession process and latest developments in the region with staffers of the German Bundestag. The discussion focused especially on the the failure of the European Council to agree on opening EU accession talks with Albania and North Macedonia, the consequences for both countries, the membership perspective for the Western Balkan region overall as well as the next steps that are to be expected at the European level.
