How can the global order be reimagined in times of growing uncertainty? This question was at the heart of a high-level panel discussion hosted by Aspen Germany as part of the Aspen Ministers Forum 2026 in Berlin.
The international order is under visible strain. Geopolitical rivalries are intensifying, multilateral institutions face fragmentation, and economic volatility, climate and health crises, as well as rapid technological change are reshaping political and societal frameworks. At the same time, polarization within many societies is deepening. While these dynamics challenge established modes of cooperation, they also create space to rethink how global collaboration can evolve.
The discussion therefore focused on how governments and societies can respond to these shifts without compromising core principles such as peace, multilateralism, democracy, and the rule of law.
The panel featured Arancha González Laya, Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA), and Malcolm Rifkind, Visiting Professor at King’s College London, and was moderated by Edward Luce of the Financial Times. Drawing on diverse perspectives and extensive political experience, the speakers engaged the audience in a forward-looking debate on the future of global cooperation.
