We live in a conflictual geoeconomic environment that is currently shaped by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the increasing strategic rivalry between the United States (and Europe) and China. The election of US President Donald Trump also calls the future of the transatlantic alliance into question. Europe will likely be asked to follow the US with regard to economic security policies against China. How does the future of the triangle between the EU, the US and China look like?
Even more, the future of the multilateral trading order and EU trade with the Global South – particularly countries in Africa and Asia – looks uncertain. At this expert conference, we will explore whether and how new alliances can be built with middle powers, while keeping the multilateral trading order from disintegrating. We will also look for ways in which closer economic cooperation between the EU and countries like Indonesia and South Africa can foster trade cooperation and enhance resilient supply chains.
All of the above topics will be discussed on Monday, June 2, 2025, from 8:30 AM, at the conference “The Future of Global Trade: Between Economic Security and New Trade Partnerships”, held in cooperation with the DGAP and Queen’s University at Rauchstraße 17/18, 10787 Berlin. The conference is composed of two panels – “The Future of the Triangle US, EU and China” and “Geoeconomics, Multilateralism, and EU Trade with the Global South” – and will offer an opportunity to discuss and connect on these topics over networking breaks.
