On February 12, 2019 the Aspen Institute Germany hosted an exclusive breakfast discussion with Montenegro’s Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Srđan Darmanović on Montenegro’s Euro-Atlantic Integration. Montenegro is the youngest NATO member state and considered to be one of the frontrunners in the EU integration process of the Western Balkan countries. The smallest country in the region has started its accession negotiations with the EU in 2012 and the EU has outlined 2025 as a potential but ambitious timeframe for its accession. This breakfast discussion gave the opportunity to discuss the progress of Montenegro’s reform process and the major challenges on its way ahead. To start off the discussion H.E. Srđan Darmanović gave a short overview of Montenegro’s progress in its Euro-Atlantic integration process and his assessment of the latest developments in the region. The following discussion focused on the cooperation between Montenegro and Germany and the role of the EU and other global actors in the region.
