Fireside Chat with Annett Meiritz

On December 3, the Aspen Institute Germany hosted a Fireside Chat at the China Club Berlin. The conversation highlighted Annett Meiritz, longtime U.S. correspondent and keen observer of American politics, who is widely recognized for her in-depth reporting on Washington D.C., U.S. democracy, and the rise of the MAGA movement. Often described as a “Trump-Versteherin” — a journalist who seeks to understand rather than simply judge — Meiritz offers a nuanced and insightful perspective on the currents shaping America’s political landscape. She shared first-hand insights into how American conservatism is reshaping political discourse — and what this means for Europe at a time of global uncertainty and democratic strain. Drawing on her new book, Meiritz explored the contradictions, motivations, and narratives driving the American right today. In the intimate atmosphere of our Fireside Chat, participants had the rare opportunity to gain a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a foreign correspondent in Washington, hear untold stories from the heart of U.S. politics, and discuss how the transatlantic partnership can navigate today’s polarized world. Thank you to our speaker Annett Meiritz and our participants for this thought-provoking evening.
