Geopolitics & the Future of Social Media

    • February 15, 2025

    • February 15, 2025

In today’s interconnected world, social media platforms are not only tools for communication, but also battlegrounds for influence, power and conflict. Against this backdrop, Aspen Germany, in partnership with the Transatlantic Hub, hosted a dynamic panel discussion in Munich exploring the intersection of geopolitics, social media and digital content creation on Saturday, February 15 at 3:30 p.m. Bringing together voices from government, the tech industry, and content creators, this timely conversation focused on how digital platforms shape and are shaped by geopolitical dynamics. Key themes included the role of authoritarian regimes such as Russia in weaponising disinformation to gain political influence, the use of digital tools to polarise societies, and the challenges of safeguarding democratic discourse in an age of sophisticated information warfare. Speakers included Ambassador Peter Ptassek, Director of Strategic Communication and Public Diplomacy at the German Foreign Office, Merle Maigre, Head of the Cybersecurity Competence Centre at the e-Governance Academy, and two content creators, Anastasia Pukha and Mihai-George Stoica, from Aspen Germany’s #InfluencersAgainstDisinfo 2024 cohort.
