On September 19, 2024, the Aspen Institute Germany hosted the third virtual workshop of the German-American Trade and Tech Dialogue 2023-2024. At a time when crucial elections on both sides of the Atlantic will shape the future of the transatlantic relationship, the German-American Trade and Tech Dialogue (GATTD) process provides ample opportunity to discuss approaches to, and areas of, cooperation. The third virtual meeting of the GATTD 2023-2024 cycle took a look at comprehensive look at the transatlantic trade relationship only six weeks from the U.S. election, and included breakout sessions on the following topics: 1. AI & Creative Industries: The Fight for IP Rights in an AI Era; and 2. Data Protection and Privacy in Electric Vehicles and Smart Cars. We were pleased to welcome the following speakers and moderators to the discussion: Rob Cabrera, Emmy-Winning Senior Artist, Concept Art Lead, & Educator; Andrew Crawford, Senior Counsel, Privacy & Data, Center for Democracy & Technology; Mary Critharis, Deputy Chief Policy Officer, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office; Guillaume Durand, Trade Officer, EU Commission in Germany; Peter Geffers, Manager Connectivity Solutions Integration & MMOTA Software Updates, Ford Werke GmbH; Molly Hall, Program Officer, Aspen Institute Germany; Michelangelo Margherita, Minister-Counselor und Head of the Trade, Agriculture and Digital Economy, Delegation of the European Union to the United States; Dr. Stormy-Annika Mildner, Executive Director, Aspen Institute Germany; Steffen Müller, Head of Directorate Digital Applications, German Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transportation; Christian Sommer, Country Representative Germany, Austria & Switzerland, Motion Pictures Association. The GATTD is a strategic dialogue on the transatlantic trade and tech agenda, fostering understanding and trust among key transatlantic policy-makers as well as business, academia, and civil society representatives. Through regular meetings over the course of 2023-2024, decision-makers exchange views on central developments and challenges with the aim of developing solutions and identifying areas for cooperation.
