Inside AI Briefings Session 3: “Standort Deutschland” – Infrastruktur, Sicherheit und Nachhaltigkeit

Advanced digital technology requires physical foundations: data centers, energy networks, secure supply chains, and sustainable operating models. But how well prepared is Germany for these requirements? And what policy decisions are needed to make the country fit for the future?
This is one of the central challenges facing German AI policy: building capable AI infrastructure requires substantial investment, long-term planning certainty, and close coordination between both public and private actors. The infrastructure decisions made today will shape strategic capabilities tomorrow.
Germany as a Location in Focus
Germany has strong industrial foundations, well-developed digital infrastructure, and a capable research sector. Yet, Germany needs to catch up in the areas of availability of computing capacity and the pace of infrastructure development.
Against this backdrop, a central question emerges: How can Germany build and secure its AI infrastructure in a way that not only works today but remains viable, secure and resilient over time?
Inside AI Briefings – Session 3: Germany as a Leading Location for AI? – Infrastructure, Security and the Sustainability of the AI Landscape
The third session of the Inside AI Briefings thus focuses on the concrete infrastructural and strategic prerequisites for Germany as a future-proof AI location. Among the questions to be addressed are: What infrastructure does Germany need to compete internationally in AI? What policy instruments and regulatory frameworks are needed to strengthen the infrastructure, security and sustainability of Germany’s AI infrastructure?
The format
The Inside AI Briefings, organized by Aspen Germany in cooperation with Amazon Web Services (AWS), are aimed at political decision-makers, ministry staff, and experts from think tanks and practice. The format is designed to provide orientation in a fast-moving and complex field. The briefings create a space where different perspectives come together and key developments can be assessed collectively.
Participants will have the opportunity to gain a well-grounded overview of the current state of AI infrastructure policy in Germany, to discuss open – including contentious – questions, to bring together perspectives from policy, practice, and research, and to develop ideas for a competitive and resilient AI infrastructure.
The coming years will determine whether Germany builds the infrastructure it needs to remain a leading AI location. This session offers the opportunity to understand, examine and actively help shape these pivotal decisions.
