On February 23, 2025, the German people cast their ballot for a new Bundestag (German Parliament) and indirectly for a new Chancellor. The Alternative for Germany (AfD), the country’s right-wing populist party, were able to make a major breakthrough in these federal elections, in which Christian Democratic Union (CDU) became the front-runner. Who won the elections and how the next government will look like will have long-lasting impacts not only for German society, but also for the country’s foreign policy and its role on the world stage. Germany’s partners were therefore closely analyzing party programs, the concerns of voters, and possible coalition formations. How were the elections and its result perceived abroad? To bring this unique perspective to the table, Aspen Germany’s International Press Roundtable convened five reknown journalists from around the world, including from Germany, France, the United States, Poland, and Italy. On February 24, 2025 from 3:00 – 4:15 p.m., we discussed with them the election results, their impact on Germany’s domestic and foreign policy, and what this meant for Germany’s partners.
We were happy to welcome:
