From May 13-17, 2025, the second in-person meeting of the Laboratories of Democracy Initiative Cohort 2025 took place in Toronto, Canada. The 30 state and provincial legislators from the United States, Germany, and Canada met with policy makers, research institutes, and representatives of the private sector, and discussed best practices connected to this year’s core theme social cohesion. Furthermore, the Cohort focused on developing subnational policy recommendations for the three subtopics of social inclusion, civic and political participation, and social mobility. The aim of the Laboratories of Democracy initiative is to promote value-based dialogue and exchange on common political challenges at the subnational level. At the same time, the exchange promotes peer learning and contributes to the development of transatlantic networks.
