Leadership is tested not only by knowledge and experience, but by the capacity to navigate ambiguity, make sound decisions under pressure, and assume responsibility in situations marked by uncertainty and change.
From June 11 to 14, 2026, Aspen Germany’s Leadership Seminar “Philosophy and Practice” convened a diverse group of senior professionals at Gut Klostermühle near Berlin. Bringing together participants from different countries and sectors, the seminar offered an intimate setting for intensive discussion, critical inquiry, and personal reflection.
Throughout the program, participants engaged with a range of philosophical, political and literary works that served as a foundation for examining the ethical dimensions of leadership. The discussions explored questions of conviction, judgment, and integrity, as well as the challenges leaders face when balancing competing obligations and expectations. The exchange of perspectives across cultures and professional backgrounds enriched the dialogue and encouraged participants to reconsider established assumptions about leadership and responsibility.
The seminar’s interactive elements created additional opportunities for learning and self-examination. Peer consultation sessions provided a structured environment for addressing concrete leadership dilemmas and receiving candid feedback from fellow participants. Conversations continued during shared walks through the surrounding landscape, offering space for reflection beyond the formal sessions. The adaptation of a classic theater piece invited participants to explore themes of authority, responsibility, and personal stance through creative practice.
The seminar was led by Prof. Dr. Carol Gluck (Columbia University, New York) and Ruth Girardet (The University of Edinburgh).
