On October 13th, 2022, Aspen Germany will host a Brown Bag Lunch on the topic “Playing With Fire? Cryptocurrencies and Financial Market Stability”. As of late, crypto assets, including cryptocurrencies, have been the subject of genuine hype. The market capitalization, for example, grew by 3.5 times at times last year. So far, financial markets, systemically important financial institutions and the crypto market have not been strongly intertwined. However, given the rapid growth, this could change quickly, raising numerous financial security issues: Cryptocurrencies are neither issued nor secured by government entities, posing risks to financial stability and users of the technologies. Moreover, inadequate legislation facilitates manipulation of the markets and their use for a range of criminal activities. In addition, the carbon footprint of cryptocurrencies is immense and detrimental to climate protection. We will discuss these issues with a crypto expert and Dr. Matthias Voelkel, CEO Boerse Stuttgart Group. The event is part of Aspen Germany’s Global Threats Series.
