Journalism in conflict zones is far more than reporting – it is work under extreme conditions. Whether in Ukraine or the Middle East, journalists on the ground operate at the intersection of risk, responsibility, and difficult ethical choices. At the same time, their reporting profoundly shapes how wars and crises are understood, interpreted, and debated worldwide.
As part of an Aspen Fireside Chat, Aspen Institute Germany will host two internationally experienced journalists who will share first-hand insights into reporting under such conditions. The conversation will focus on their experiences in the field: How is reliable information gathered in volatile and often inaccessible environments? What decisions must be made under time pressure and personal risk? And how can journalistic integrity be upheld in contexts shaped by propaganda, disinformation, and restricted access?
The discussion will combine personal perspectives with analytical reflection, exploring how journalists navigate uncertainty and responsibility, the ethical dilemmas they face, and the role of independent reporting in times of war, political instrumentalization, and digital disinformation.
The exclusive Fireside Chat at the China Club Berlin offers a space for an open, candid, and critical conversation about the importance of journalism where information is contested – and where credible reporting is more essential than ever.
