Can Europe turn its digital ambitions into real competitiveness? Following the European Council meeting, Aspen Institute Germany convened policy makers, industry leaders, and experts for an exclusive breakfast roundtable on March 26, 2026: “After the European Council Meeting: Delivering ‘One Europe, One Market’ – The Digital Dimension.” The discussion offered a timely opportunity to assess the Council’s outcomes and examine how digital policy will shape the next phase of Europe’s economic and technological trajectory.
Jeanne Dillschneider, MdB, Fredrik Erixon, Martin Hullin, Julian Jakob, and Rabea Knorr shared their perspectives on the evolving role of digital regulation, technological sovereignty, and the future of the European Single Market. The conversation quickly moved beyond diagnosis to key strategic questions.
Participants highlighted Europe’s continued dependencies in critical technologies and infrastructure, alongside the need to strengthen resilience without retreating from global trade and cooperation. A recurring theme was the importance of greater coherence in digital policy, ensuring that existing rules support, rather than hinder, innovation, and competitiveness.
The discussion also addressed the challenge of aligning national priorities with a shared European strategy and the need to create conditions that allow European companies to scale globally. Questions of technological sovereignty, digital infrastructure, and Europe’s position in strategic sectors were central throughout.
Above all, the exchange underscored a sense of urgency: Europe’s digital ambitions must now translate into concrete, coordinated action, balancing competitiveness, sustainability, and regulatory integrity.
