This small roundtable brought together a select group of participants for a discussion with Elliot Gerson, Executive Vice President, Policy Programs and International Partners at The Aspen Institute, and Professor Jacob Hacker, Stanely B. Resor Professor of Political Science, Co-Director of the Ludwig Program in Public Sector Leadership at Yale Law School, and American Academy in Berlin American Political Economy Fellow. Elliot Gerson oversees Aspen’s wide-ranging policy programs, which convene leaders and experts across sectors to foster problem-solving dialogue on domestic and foreign policy, civic life, the arts, business, science, and community impact.
Professor Jacob Hacker is an expert on American politics and policy. During his time at the American Academy his research focuses on the evolution of the Democratic Party.
Together, the discussion explored current developments in Washington and how U.S. political dynamics, both within Washington and within the Democratic Party, are influencing the work of non-profit organizations, think tanks, and policy institutions today. How are political polarization and institutional constraints shaping the Democratic Party’s trajectory toward 2028? And how are independent policy organizations navigating this environment, supporting constructive debate, and contributing to the policy landscape?
