Study Trip Tirana “Solidarity in Action: A Transatlantic Collaboration Platform for Peace and Democracy in the Western Balkans”

From October 29 to November 2 2025, the Aspen Institute Germany, in cooperation with the Aspen Strategy Group, Aspen Institute Romania, and Aspen Institute Italia, hosted the “Solidarity in Action: A Transatlantic Collaboration Platform for Peace and Democracy in the Western Balkans” study trip in Tirana. The program brought together 20 emerging civil society leaders from the United States, the Western Balkans, Germany, Italy, and Romania for an immersive five-day experience combining expert-led sessions, high-level dialogues, and cultural events. The study trip featured dynamic sessions covering the region’s most pressing challenges and opportunities for cooperation. Participants explored the role of youth, civil society, and minorities in regional and transatlantic collaboration with Kreshnik Loka, Klark Radoniqi, and Adriatik Hasantari. They examined democratic resilience in the Western Balkans through insights from Professor Odeta Barbullushi and Bora Muzhaqi, and discussed the future of transatlantic engagement with Dr. Valbona Zeneli and Thilo Schroeter. Ambassador Michel Tarran and Jorida Tabaku offered perspectives on good governance and resilience, while Klodiana Kapo and Kristina Voko addressed the critical issue of information integrity in the region. The program also included a dinner with Mimi Kodheli, Member of the Albanian Parliament and former Minister of Defence, providing participants with personal insights into Albania’s political landscape. Cultural activities complemented the professional program, including a guided walking tour of Tirana and the Albanian Night Shows, which showcased traditional dances and songs, offering participants a deeper understanding of the country’s heritage. Throughout the trip, participants engaged in collaborative dialogue aimed at developing concrete policy recommendations for transatlantic and regional decision-makers, strengthening networks, and fostering sustainable cooperation across the Western Balkans.
