On February 9, 2026, a second virtual meeting on agricultural policy in Germany, the European Union, and the United States took place for participants in the U.S.-German Forum Future Agriculture. The Aspen Institute Germany and its project partner, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, welcomed participants to an interactive transatlantic exchange. The meeting began with a presentation, Q&A, and discussion on agricultural policy in Germany and the European Union with Prof. Dr. Harald Grethe, Working Group on Agricultural Development and Trade, Faculty of Life Sciences, Humboldt University of Berlin. In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Grethe focused on the key actors and policy instruments shaping agricultural policy in Germany and Europe, as well as current trends and major challenges related to health and animal welfare in the swine and poultry sectors. This session followed a presentation, Q&A, and discussion on agricultural policy in the United States with Jonathan Coppess, Associate Professor and Director of the Gardner Agriculture Policy Program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His presentation addressed the central players and policy tools within the U.S. agricultural policy landscape and also touched on current trends and key issues related to health and wellbeing in the swine and poultry industries. Participants were encouraged to actively contribute their questions, comments, and insights to the discussion. The U.S.-German Forum Future Agriculture brings together German and U.S. farmers as well as key stakeholders from agricultural research, policy, and industry to foster innovative approaches to sustainable agriculture and rural development and to strengthen transatlantic cooperation.
The project is supported by the Transatlantic Program of the Federal Republic of Germany with funds from the European Recovery Program (ERP) of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWE).
