In an era marked by geopolitical uncertainty, democratic strain, and growing fragmentation of the international order, the need for sustained dialogue on values-based leadership and global cooperation has never been more urgent. Against this backdrop – and on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Aspen Institute Spain – representatives from Aspen Institutes around the world gathered in Spain from April 23 to 26, 2026, to deepen institutional ties, reflect on shared priorities, and advance cooperation on pressing global challenges.
The Aspen network today connects 13 International Partners across 16 countries, including Central Europe, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Romania, Spain, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the Africa Initiative-Nairobi.
More than 100 participants gathered in historic venues such as the Royal Palace of La Granja and the Centro Guardia de Corps, where strategic discussions were complemented by cultural exchange in a uniquely historic Spanish setting. The program opened with a colloquium titled “Leading for the Common Good in 2026”, held in the presence of His Majesty King Felipe VI alongside national, regional and local authorities. Discussions focused on the role of values-based leadership in times of global uncertainty, democratic resilience, and the increasing importance of international cooperation.
A central element of the gathering was the Leadership Seminar, which brought together Aspen leaders and international participants for an in-depth exchange on ethical leadership, responsibility, and institution-building in a rapidly changing world.
Following the IC Meeting, participants continued to Madrid for the Bloomberg CityLab 2026, held from April 27 to 29 in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies and The Aspen Institute (U.S.). The global summit once again served as a leading forum on the future of cities, bringing together mayors, urban innovators, civic leaders, and policy makers from around the world.
Together, the IC Meeting and CityLab 2026 formed a continuous platform linking institutional reflection with practical approaches to urban development. Both gatherings underscored Aspen Spain’s strong commitment to fostering global cooperation and developing innovative responses to today’s most pressing societal challenges.
