Aspen Germany member Robin Arens participated in this year’s Aspen Institute Italia Leadership Seminar, held in April under the theme “(de-)Globalization and the Quest for Common Values.” Over the course of four days, emerging leaders from six countries came together to discuss today’s geopolitical challenges and some of the fundamental questions shaping today’s world. Below, Robin shares his personal reflections and experiences from the seminar.

In mid-April, this year’s Aspen Institute Italia Leadership Seminar took place in the Tuscan countryside under the theme “(de-) Globalization and the Quest for Common Values.” Set in the quiet surroundings of the mountains, 18 participants from six countries explored both practical and fundamental issues, including artificial intelligence, climate change, and globalization. Leigh Hafrey(MIT) and Giovanni Farese (European University of Rome) guided the seminar with great skill, facilitating thoughtful and engaging discussions throughout the four days.
The seminar readings ranged from Aristotle to Mohsin Hamid, offering participants the opportunity to engage with a wide variety of perspectives and ideas. Since everyone had prepared the texts in advance, discussions could immediately focus on the substance rather than the summaries. Conversations during the seminar sessions naturally continued over meals and breaks, creating a continuous exchange of ideas throughout the program.
For me, the seminar’s greatest strength lay in the combination of close engagement with the readings and the open, intellectually stimulating discussions. The well-established Aspen seminar format creates a unique space for reflection, encouraging participants to challenge their own assumptions while learning from others. The experience is shared collectively, yet its impact is deeply personal and continues long after the seminar itself has ended.
It is precisely this lasting impact – rather than only the outstanding Italian cuisine or the beautiful Tuscan setting – that will stay with me for a long time. My conclusion is simple: if you have the opportunity to participate in this or any other seminar within the Aspen Institutes network, take it. You will meet inspiring people, spend several days immersed in meaningful conversations with others and yourself, and return home with fresh perspectives and new ideas.
