Few periods in recent memory have been marked by such profound geopolitical change. Russia’s war against Ukraine continues to challenge Europe’s security, the transatlantic relationship is being fundamentally reshaped, and technological competition and economic security have become defining features of international affairs. At the same time, democratic societies are confronting growing polarization, disinformation, and declining trust in public institutions.
Against this backdrop, the first half of 2026 has been an exceptionally active period for Aspen Germany. Across 74 events, the Institute welcomed more than 3,200 participants and over 430 speakers from politics, business, academia, media, and civil society. Through conferences, leadership programs, public debates, publications, and international dialogue initiatives, Aspen Germany continued to create trusted spaces for open, values-based exchange while addressing the defining political, economic and technological challenges of our time.
A particular highlight was Aspen Germany’s extensive engagement at the Munich Security Conference, where the Institute convened a series of high-level discussions on European security, transatlantic relations, and the future of deterrence. Equally significant was the German-American Trade and Tech Conference, which brought together policy makers, business leaders, and experts from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss the future of economic security, technological competition, artificial intelligence, and transatlantic cooperation.
The Institute also continued to expand innovative dialogue formats, including its Oxford-style debates, strengthened its engagement with young leaders through new partnerships and leadership initiatives, and broadened its public outreach through the America’s Choice podcast, publications, and media contributions.
Building on this momentum, Aspen Germany launched several major new initiatives during the first half of the year. RESET is investing in the next generation of transatlantic political leaders, SECURE is deepening regional cooperation and democratic resilience in the Western Balkans, Digital Defenders equips content creators and journalists to counter disinformation and hybrid threats, and Connecting Futures brings together emerging media leaders from the EU enlargement region to explore the future of information integrity. In addition, the Institute launched a new series of transatlanticdelegation programs for the German Federal Foreign Office, further strengthening its role as a trusted platform for international dialogue and exchange.
Leadership development remained at the heart of Aspen Germany’s work. Through its renowned leadership seminars, the Institute continued to provide participants with the opportunity to step back from the demands of daily decision-making and engage in thoughtful reflection on the values, responsibilities, and ethical dilemmas of leadership. At a time when political and societal challenges are becoming increasingly complex, investing in principled leadership remains one of Aspen Germany’s most important contributions.
The first half of the year also marked an important moment in the Institute’s governance. During the Annual General Meeting in June, members elected and confirmed the leadership of the organization, ensuring continuity while welcoming new perspectives. We are delighted to welcome Dr. Andrea Römmele to the Management Board and extend our sincere gratitude to Prof. Dr. Gunther Hellmann for his many years of dedicated service and commitment to the Institute. At the same time, Cecilie Rohwedder was re-elected to the Board of Trustees, while Britt Eckelmann, Margit Lehwalder, and Ulrich Plett were re-confirmed as members of the Management Board. Their continued commitment provides a strong foundation for Aspen Germany’s future development.
Finally, our community continued to grow. We were delighted to welcome new members to the Friends of Aspen Germany, whose support plays an essential role in enabling the Institute’s independent, non-partisan work. Their commitment not only strengthens our community but also helps ensure that Aspen Germany can continue to convene diverse perspectives, develop innovative programs, and invest in the next generation of leaders.
As we look ahead to the second half of 2026, we remain committed to providing trusted spaces for dialogue, strengthening democratic resilience, and fostering transatlantic and European cooperation. None of this would be possible without the engagement of our partners, participants, speakers, members, and supporters.
