Current political challenges are manifold – from the ongoing war in Ukraine to eroding trust in political institutions in Germany and the United States. To discuss these challenges and to contribute to a diverse, respectful, and substantial political discourse, Aspen Germany is launching the event series Deep Dive Discussions.
The goal of this event series is to bring different thematic communities into contact with each other, allowing for more nuanced and varied conversations and helping to identify common ground in the acknowledgement of the existence of different, sometimes opposite, perspectives and opinions. This event series also seeks to activate young people both as panelists and in the audience and to bring them into dialogue with older members oft he Aspen community and established experts. Each event in this series will focus on one of the following three topics: transatlantic relations, security, and community of values. Deep Dive Discussions aims to explore the challenges and opportunities in these areas, focusing on issues such as democracy and polarization in the transatlantic community, the role of the United States in international order and NATO, European security structures, and the responsibility of businesses in fostering social cohesion, among others. The three chosen topics are deeply interlinked in their effects on the future of international cooperation and stability.
- Transatlantic Relations: This topic will analyze the political and economic relationship between Europe and North America, specifically looking at social cohesion, the role of the United States in the international order, and the transatlantic security cooperation.
- Security: The discussions will underline security structures, with a particular focus on the role of the United States in NATO and transatlantic security cooperation, European security frameworks, and the implications of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
- Community of Values: This topic will investigate the foundations of social cohesion, specifically examining the responsibility of businesses in fostering democratic principles, the notion of European values, and the growing political and societal polarization in Germany.
These three topics reflect some of the most pressing challenges in national and international politics. Aspen Germany strives towards contributing to a strong transatlantic partnership and European community, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts like the war in Ukraine, that directly impact the international order and global security.
