Future Cities Go Glocal

What does it take to live in a city that is fair, sustainable, and fit for the future?

Today’s cities grapple with the pressing challenges of our time, such as climate change, energy security, migration, social justice, and inadequate infrastructure. At the same time, they also serve as testing grounds for innovative solutions and ideas which can be applied to the national level. “Future Cities Go Glocal” recognizes cities as both global and local actors. The aim is to promote exchange between city stakeholders from Berlin, New Delhi, Nairobi, and Mexico City in order to share best practices, create new networks, and develop policy recommendations for sustainable and inclusive urban development in the face of these diverse challenges.

Under the compelling theme of “The Just City”, the initiative delves into “Glocal” issues, forming two cohorts with urban stakeholders from politics, city administration, civil society, culture and many other fields relevant to urban life. Together, they will explore and address the complexities of a future city by fostering an environment of mutual learning and exchange. “Future Cities Go Glocal” strengthens the role of cities as pivotal players in the global transition towards a more just and sustainable society. It aspires to realize the vision of fair, resilient cities, capable of adapting to and thriving amidst the dynamic challenges of the 21st century.

Building on the success of Aspen Germany’s previous project, “Future Cities – A Transatlantic Townhall Project”, which explored future scenarios for cities in the transatlantic context, “Future Cities Go Glocal” leverages the results and networks established by its predecessor. The participants will bring their unique backgrounds, expertise, life experiences, hopes, and visions for the future, paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable society.

The project is supported by the Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin.
