America’s Choice: Mysterious Powers, Viral Delusion and Social Media – Conspiracy Theories in the U.S. Election

The QAnon conspiracy theories are a mixture of substitute religion, right-wing pseudo-mysticism, social event and fake news entertainment. The movement is gaining more and more followers around the world, not only in the United States. How can this phenomenon be explained and how dangerous is it for democracy? How do tech companies regulate content associated with such conspiracy theories on their social media platforms? And what role do social media platforms play in the 2020 election? America’s Choice hosts David Deißner, Executive Director at the Atlantik-Brücke, and Tyson Barker, Deputy Executive Director and Fellow at the Aspen Institute Germany, are joined by Marie-Astrid Langer, Silicon Valley correspondent at Neue Zürcher Zeitung, and Julia Friedlander, C. Boyden Gray Senior Fellow and Deputy Director at the Atlantic Council, to discuss these and other questions.

“America’s Choice – Der US-Wahlcast” is a German-language podcast on the 2020 U.S. election, co-produced by the Aspen Institute Germany and the Atlantik-Brücke. The podcast is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other platforms.
