On December 5, 2023, the Aspen Institute Germany hosted a background discussion on the current situation in the Western Balkans between representatives of the German Government and staffers of the German Bundestag. Dr. Malte Hauschild, Head of Division EB5 EU enlargement, Southeastern Europe, Turkey, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action; Marion Fleuth-Leferink, Division 302 – South-Eastern and Eastern Europe, South Caucasus Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development; and Dr. Niels von Redecker, Head of Division 209 Western Balkans, German Federal Foreign Office, shared their assessments of the situation in the region from the perspective of their respective divisions and present the priorities, initiatives, and challenges for the next year.
The event was intended for members of the German Bundestag from all parties with an interest in the Western Balkans. The discussion took place under the Chatham House Rule.
