On Tuesday, February 22, 2022, Aspen Institute Germany hosted a Brown Bag Lunch on the topic of “Thinking Long-Term: For a Council of Strategic Foresight”. Some global threats have been looming on the horizon for some time, but sometimes they take us by surprise. What is important is how we counter such threats, such as global terrorism, climate change or the Ukraine-Russia crisis. Strategic foresight deals with the consideration of different plausible future scenarios and the associated opportunities and challenges. In German politics, strategic foresight can be a helpful tool to identify and be better prepared for rapidly changing global challenges. Prof. James D. Bindenagel, Senior Professor, Center for Advanced Security, Strategic, and Integration Studies (CASSIS) and retired U.S. Ambassador, and Prof. Dr. Andreas Heinemann-Grüder, Professor, Institute for Political Science and Sociology, University of Bonn therefore argued for a Council of Strategic Foresight as an institutional venue to bring together foresight debates in foreign and security policy. Dr. Stormy Mildner, Executive Director of Aspen Germany, moderated the discussion. This event is part of Aspen Germany’s Global Threats Series.
