What will Europe’s future look like? On June 8, 2017, the Aspen Institute Germany in cooperation with the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg and the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Austria in Berlin hosted a conference on the topic “Next Europe.” The conference began with a keynote speech by Elmar Brok, Member and former Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament. The first panel debate on the topic of “Good Governance – Bad Governance: Does Europe need to reinvent itself?” focused on current challenges like the developments in Poland and Hungary and the handling of criticism of the European Union. In a second discussion, the digital transformation, its impact on Europe’s society and economy, and the opportunity for European cooperation in this field were discussed. The conference ended on a very positive note as Richard Kühnel, Head of Representation of the European Commission in Germany, noted that it was worth defending the European dream with self-confidence and trust.
