On June 19, 2019, the Aspen Institute Germany hosted a debate on the topic “NATO at 70: Continued Success or Imminent Decline?” with Christiane Hoffmann, Diplomatic Correspondent, Der Spiegel, Ambassador Dr. Hans-Dieter Lucas, Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the North Atlantic Council, and Dr. Andrew Michta, Dean, College of International and Security Studies, George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies. The event was opened with an input statement on multilateralism by Hendrik Meijer, author of “Arthur Vandenberg: The Man in the Middle of the American Century.” The subsequent discussion addressed NATO’s current and future direction beyond the 2 percent debate. The focus was on the commitment of Germany and the other NATO partners to the defense alliance as well as internal and external challenges facing NATO. There was also extensive discussion on how to guarantee cooperation and success in the future.
