On January 15, 2019, the Aspen Institute Germany in cooperation with Daimler hosted a discussion on “Alliance ou Mésalliance? Europe Waits for Macron & Merkel.” The event began with an input statement by H.E. Anne-Marie Descôtes, Ambassador of the French Republic in Berlin. The subsequent panel discussion with H.E. Anne-Marie Descôtes, Dr. Almut Möller, Head of the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations, and Eckart von Klaeden, Vice President and Head of External Affairs at Daimler AG, provided an opportunity to discuss the current political and economic questions, challenges, and fields of cooperation in the Franco-German partnership. The discussion focused on Macron’s reform policy, the yellow vests’ protests, and German-French cooperation in politics and industry. The panelists and participants also addressed the implications of the Brexit for the Franco-German duo and the future of the European Union.
