On August 23, 2023, the Aspen Institute Germany hosts an online workshop as part of the project “Disinformation and the Role of Social Media Influencers in Times of Crises, Conflicts, and Wars” with the topic “Dealing with Online Attacks, Hate Speech, and Shitstorms”. The project brings together seventeen social media influencers and content creators from Germany, Ukraine, Romania, Czech Republic, Lithuania, and Latvia with other actors to discuss their role in democratic societies in times of conflict. Over the course of 2023, a selected group of influencers and content creators will exchange lessons learned, meet with academics, experts, and decision-makers, and discuss mechanisms of disinformation online and how to counter them. Participants will work together on recommendations to be presented to policymakers, social media platforms, and civil society organizations.
Online attacks are a common tool in the context of disinformation campaigns to intimidate opponents and exclude their voices from the debate. The workshop aims to equip participants with more knowledge, strategies, and tools to effectively to mitigate online attacks and counter hate speech – from practical insights to actionable techniques. It also offers an exchange on best practices and aims at initiating a support structure within the group.
Please note: This event is not open to the public.
More information on the project can be found here.
The project is supported by the German Federal Foreign Office. We thank the Aspen Institute Central Europe, the Aspen Institute Kyiv, and the Aspen Institute Romania for their support.
