On Friday, February 17, 2017, the Aspen Institute Germany organized an exclusive background meeting with U.S. Governor John R. Kasich from Ohio, a presidential candidate for the Republican Party in 2016, as a side event to the Munich Security Conference. The dialog with members of the German Bundestag, transatlantic think tanks, and representatives of the German business community mainly focused on the expectations of German transatlanticists regarding the new U.S. administration and possible consequences of Trump’s announcements to radically change the course of U.S. policies. Both sides agreed that the new administration could not be judged on grounds of mere election rhetoric and the first statements of some of the incoming Trump appointees.
