Global Threats Series “Playing With Fire? Crypto Currencies and the Financial Market Stability”

On October 13th, 2022, Aspen Germany hosted a Brown Bag Lunch on the topic “Playing With Fire? Crypto Currencies and the Financial Market Stability”. As of late, crypto assets, including cryptocurrencies, have been the subject of genuine hype. The market capitalization, for example, grew by 3.5 times at times last year. So far, financial markets, systemically important financial institutions and the crypto market have not been strongly intertwined. However, given the rapid growth, this could change quickly, raising numerous financial security issues: Cryptocurrencies are neither issued nor secured by government entities, posing risks to financial stability and users of the technologies. Moreover, inadequate legislation facilitates manipulation of the markets and their use for a range of criminal activities. In addition, the carbon footprint of cryptocurrencies is immense and detrimental to climate protection. We discussed these issues with Dr. Lennart Ante, CEO & Co-Founder of the Blockchain Research Lab and Dr. Matthias Voelkel, CEO of Börse Stuttgart. The event is part of Aspen Germany’s Global Threats Series.
