On Wednesday, July 3, 2024, the Aspen Institute Germany hosted another virtual event of our International Press Roundtable event series, titled “75 Years of NATO: The Anniversary Summit and its Significance”. This year marks NATO’s 75th anniversary, celebrated amidst challenging circumstances: With Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine, NATO’s relevance is of particular importance. In 2023 and 2024, Sweden and Finland respectively joined NATO. Ukraine seeks membership, which is currently the subject of controversial debates.
Together with Olga Rudenko, Editor-in-Chief, Kyiv Independent; Steven Erlanger, Chief Diplomatic Correspondent, New York Times; Maria Stenroos, NATO Correspondent, Yle; and Dr. Thomas Gutschker, Political Correspondent for EU, NATO, and Benelux, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, we tackled the following questions: What steps should NATO take to further counter the Russian war of aggression? How decisive will the outcome of the U.S. presidential election in November 2024 be for the continuation of unrestricted support for Ukraine and the cohesion of NATO? What role will Germany play in the future of the alliance? How can the media ensure well-founded and differentiated reporting on current developments, even in times of war and isolation? The discussion was moderated by Stormy-Annika Mildner, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Germany. The event can be re-watched via this link.
