On December 19, Aspen Germany hosted a digital event titled “Women leading to learn: Education and Rights under Taliban Rules”. Since the Taliban took power, disregard for human and women’s rights in Afghanistan has skyrocketed. The developments are devastating for the generation of Afghans who fought for decades for more women’s rights and access to education.
What impact is the education of Afghan women and girls having on the Taliban regime? How will discrimination against women affect Afghan society in the long term? What are some ways to support the education of women and girls under Taliban rule? The event took place to discuss these and other questions with our special guest Pashtana Durrani. Pashtana Durrani is an Afghan human rights activist. Durrani is also the executive director of LEARN Afghanistan, an organization she founded. Durrani won the Tällberg-SNF-Eliasson Global Leadership Prize in the Emerging Leader 2021 category and was on the BBC’s list of the 100 Most Influential Women 2021. For her advocacy, Durrani is named an Education Champion by the Malala Fund. Pashtana Durrani is part of the Aspen Institute’s New Voices Fellowship Class of 2022.
