The USA will decide on November 5th of this year who will govern the country as president for the next four years. A few days ago, the first two primaries took place in the states of Iowa and New Hampshire. While two candidates are competing for the Republican Party’s nomination, President Biden faces little serious competition within the Democratic ranks. Economically, the state of the United States will again be of great importance in 2024. However, foreign and security policy, especially in the context of the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, could play a more significant role in these elections than in previous years. Especially these two issues are likely to shape the further course of the primaries and caucuses in both parties. Why are the first two primaries traditionally important for the campaign? What conclusions can be drawn from the results? Can Nikki Haley remain a serious competitor to former President Donald Trump? To what extent do the results of the primaries influence the actions of the government and President Biden’s campaign? Podcast hosts Julia Friedlander from the Atlantic Bridge and Stormy-Annika Mildner from the Aspen Institute Germany discuss these questions with Peter Burghardt, U.S. correspondent for the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Washington, D.C., and Majda Ruge, Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) in Berlin.
