The pivot of the United States towards the Indo-Pacific was one of the key strategic decisions of President Obama. Since then, the foreign, security, and economic policies of the United States have primarily focused on this populous and economically booming world region. Especially in competition with China, President Biden’s government is pursuing an approach that falls between decoupling and derisking. However, the rivalry between the two largest economies in the world goes far beyond economic and technological matters. This is evident in the Taiwan issue and the territorial claims of the People’s Republic in the South and East China Seas. Will President Biden succeed in revitalizing American industrial sites in key technologies? How does China respond to the intensified competition with the United States? Is the US strategy for Taiwan effective? To what extent is the US search for democratic states for security partnerships in the Indo-Pacific making progress? Podcast hosts Julia Friedlander of the Atlantic Bridge and Stormy-Annika Mildner of the Aspen Institute Germany discuss these questions with Matthias Naß, International Correspondent of the editorial board of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit in Hamburg.
