On June 19-22, 2017 the Aspen Institute Germany with support of the Federal Foreign Office hosted a conference on “Improving Perspectives for the Youth: Economic Development and Job Creation in the Western Balkans“ in Alt Madlitz. The participants, coming from the region as well as from several member states of the EU, were composed of high-ranking actors and experts from politics, economics and academia. Over the course of two days, they discussed current economic developments in the Western Balkans, especially with regard to job creation. Issues addressed in this context included the role of education and vocational training reforms, the role of digitalization for the economic development of the region, the EU enlargement agenda and its support for economic development, as well as regional economic relations. Meetings with Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy Uwe Beckmeyer, Members of the German Parliament, and the Managing Director of the Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations complemented the informal discussions.
