The next event in the virtual event series “Road to Election 2024” will focus on the current student protests and their impact on the U.S. presidential elections. This spring’s student protests were more dramatic than any America has seen since the Vietnam War. On some campuses, classes and even graduation were canceled; in a number of cases, police were called in to dismantle protestors’ encampments. The protests also raised the question of whether opposition to the Biden administration’s policies toward Israel and Gaza could weaken support for the president’s effort to win reelection.
To discuss the campus turmoil of 2024, the president of the American Academy in Berlin, Daniel Benjamin, will speak with student journalist Theo Baker of Stanford—whose article “The War at Stanford” appeared in The Atlantic in March—Nicholas Christakis, Sterling Professor of Social and Natural Science at Yale, and pollster Laura Silver, an associate director at Pew Research Center. The event is organized and hosted by the Road to Election partner organization American Academy in Berlin. Please find more information about the event and its registration here.
The 2024 U.S. election will significantly shape the transatlantic political environment and policy landscape. Transatlantic organizations play an integral role in convening thought leaders, bringing a transatlantic perspective to U.S. and European domestic policy discussions, and influencing public discourse on both sides of the Atlantic. This will be particularly important in 2024, which is why the Aspen Institute Germany is pleased to partner with over 25 other transatlantic organizations and political foundations on the “Road to Election 2024” virtual event series. Information about all events in the series can be found at: www.roadtoelection.de. Running from January 2024 to January 2025, the virtual event series will host in-depth discussions and foster a vibrant exchange of ideas in the lead-up to the pivotal 2024 U.S. election. The initiative’s events will feature prominent researchers, policymakers, commentators, and civil society representatives, exploring diverse formats and a wide array of topics. From public polling and media impact to electoral demographics, the future of U.S. democracy, and pressing policy issues like trade and immigration, the “Road to Election” series aims to offer comprehensive insights for audiences in both the United States and Germany.
