Roundtable Discussion: The Impact of Mis- and Disinformation in the Digital World

    • June 13, 2022

    • March 28, 2023

On June 13, 2022, from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. (CET) Aspen Germany and Aspen Digital (Washington, D.C.) hosted an exclusive roundtable discussion on Information Disorder Report: The Impact of Mis- and Disinformation in the Digital World, with input from Vivian Schiller, Executive Director of Aspen Digital, former President and CEO of NPR and Global Chair of News at Twitter, and Ryan Merkley, Managing Director at Aspen Digital, former Chief of Staff at the Wikimedia Foundation and Chief Operating Officer of Mozilla. The event was moderated by Dr. Stormy-Annika Mildner, Executive Director of Aspen Germany.
Bad information has become as prevalent, persuasive, and persistent as good information, creating a chain reaction of harm. It makes any health crisis more deadly. It slows down response time to climate change. It undermines democracy.
The Aspen Institute’s Commission on Digital Disorder was created to address these conditions. The Commission’s Final Report offers a viable framework for action and makes 15 recommendations for how governments, private industry, and civil society can help to increase transparency and understanding, build trust, and reduce harms. Building on the Commission’s Report, this roundtable discussion turns to Europe as a regulatory center of gravity.
How does information disorder impact our ability to respond to crises? How to reduce the flow of misinformation to the public and improve the quality of information which the public receive? How does information disorder impact public trust in institutions?
Together with a small group of selected participants, we discussed these and many other questions.
