On September 29, 2021, the Aspen Institute Germany hosted a virtual panel discussion on the topic of “Leadership in Times of Crisis: Arts and Culture” with Christina März, Curator / Exhibitions, Deutsche Bank Collection; Prof. Mathilde ter Heijne, Professor of Visual Arts, Performance, and Media at the University of the Arts in Berlin and Sharese Bullock-Bailey, Chief Strategy and Partnership Officer at Ghetto Film School and board member of the Frick Collection in New York City. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Stormy-Annika Mildner, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Germany. In times of uncertainty artists and cultural institutions have been hit hardest by the pandemic and were forced to shut their doors almost overnight. In Germany alone, the performing arts saw a loss of revenue of up to 85 percent. What became apparent is that – especially in challenging times – arts and culture are an important resource for citizens to deal with the repercussions of the pandemic. This virtual panel discussion touched on the kind of leadership and responsibility art institutions should embrace to navigate through the current situation.
